Forget about Raising the Titanic, raise Education

Economy! How the world is going to recover from Covid19. Borrowing, stimulus packages, debt, the need to create jobs and a plethora of similar blurts as we react in shock, horror and additional expletives to the fact that profits are down by 80%... how can one survive one asks, on a 20% profit?

I know I am being simplistic, but the noise re financial losses, job losses and a shrinking economy worldwide are valid only in minimalistic terms. Economies will recover! Jobs will again be created, entrepreneurs out there are already picking the dry bones of the dead and resurrecting armies to march in the face of adversity. The poor will, by and large, remain poor. The gap between rich and poor will grow despite politicians waxing lyrical in vote garnering speeches filled with Socialism and deafening calls for upliftment as we teach to fish but forget to supply or show how to make a rod.

Forget about the ECONOMY!  (If the richest men and women in the world decided to use their wealth to grow poorer nation economies there would be no hunger, no poverty in the world)

What is needed is a very real focus on Education! And let us take Education out of the hands of politicians. Show me a politician genuinely interested and active in Education! No not one waving hands and smiling for the media attention or gathering the melting ice outside of his Martini to show how concerned he is re Global warming. Place the power for real education change in the hands of Educators. And I do not mean Academics! These wonderful people who are so focused they cannot see the wood for trees. They being the ones who we do need to sift and find cures for Covid. Educators being the ones who can understand what we need to ensure the world may one day be in secure hands because the young people of today have been well educated.

BUT! Tomorrow is NOT in the hands of the young people of today. Heaven forbid that it is, for if that is so the world is beyond doomed! Tomorrow is in the hands of the people of today.  The young people of today are not ready for tomorrow. They can barely manage today! Designer jeans do not make a climate activist. A two minutes twisted paradigm/video on Twitter/Instagram/Fundo/Twitch/MeWe/Youtube/TikTok is not going to save the world, even if it “goes viral”.

What is needed is for the education sector to be recognized and valued for what it is. If you can read and or write you will have passed through the hands of a teacher. Raise the teacher to the top of the economic pile and watch how the country blossoms. The Banker/Supermarket Executive/Hotel Chain Owner (add your own to the list) is merely an employer, nothing more nothing less and accumulates wealth for no real purpose whatsoever. The Educator is an enabler, awakening minds, growing souls and needs to be placed where he/she is so recognized for the task and is secure.

The pandemic has had at least one value for the Education Profession…the growth of home schooling and the idea that any parent can teach (after all they spent a large amount of time in a classroom) has greatly been debunked as parents have realized that teaching is not merely knowledge but how. And they do not know HOW.

Take care of today. Tomorrow will arrive without your intervention, but it will be a better tomorrow if you take good care of today.
